Weyland's Smithy by Thorskegga Weyland's Smithy by Thorskegga
Weyland's Smithy is a long barrow near Uffington, Oxfordshire, England.

It is named after the Anglo-Saxon smith god Weyland (known in Norse as Volund) who accordingly to local folklore has been known to shoe horses for travellers on the Ridgeway path.

Lovely pic of a place I've visited a few times before.  Ah, I've got to get back there when the weather picks up a bit.

With an early start and a car you could visit Uffington, Avebury, Silbury, West Kennett and Stonehenge in one day - all well worth a visit.

Within 50 miles I think.

Glastonbury (Somerset), the Rollright stone circle and the Whispering Knights dolmen (North Oxfordshire) arent much further.

When we were there about 6 years ago my husband and one of his friends started bounding around singing "Wayland's Smithy Has Wings" to the obvious disapproval of one mirthless family who glared at them in an "All animals should be kept on a leash." sort of way.
Thanks for reminding me of something really funny.
What time of day did you take the picture?

Just wondered about what time it was taken because both times I've been there it's been quite busy. It would have taken something more uncivil than glaring to take a photo without it containing any of the other visitors.
Maybe we could have hunkerered down in the car with a tartan thermos flask and waited...

Can recommend the Red Lion there

Not many pubs where you can enjoy a pint of cider in the middle of a huge stone circle :)

Oh I'm thinking about visiting this when I'm in England. How difficult is it to get too?

Would be hard without a car as it is deep in the countryside.

Its about a two mile walk from the Uffington Horse car park on a footpath called The Ridgeway. Allow several hours as its a big site and there's lots to see.

Its about 30 minutes by car away from Avebury which is well worth a visit too.
