Romanesque Thor

Description

The second of my Romanesque heathen gods series.

Romanesque is the art style of Christian Europe between the fall of the Roman Empire and the mid Thirteenth century.

In later illustrations circa sixteenth and seventeenth centuries Thor is shown enthroned with a halo of fire and stars, probably based on the descriptions of the ancient temple of Uppsala, Sweden, where Thor was honoured as the king of the gods with Odin and Frey on either side.

Thor Frey and Odin all alternated between pole position, they all have titles implying they are the most important of the gods. For example Thor is the 'Almighty' and 'Frey' is the 'Greatest of the Aesir'.

I have posted this tonight as we are just starting our Nine Year Festival as a continuation of the ancient Uppsala ceremonies.

I find it so fascinating that Norse Paganism has survived for so long. And perhaps in a sense the world it better for it. These gods gives those who worshipped them and whose ancestors worshiped them an idea of where they came from. And if they did not have they, are they not lesser for it? I doubt my ancestors worshipped Thor, at most they would have worshipped his more Germanic counterpart Donar before converting to christianity. But at least I can say I know that.
